I have inserted this as the house is scurrying around in anticipation of the arrival of a 10 month old baby (somewhere between 8 & 10, ) Baby Samual , who has a very distended belly. He is from the Orphanage. We saw him yesterday and he had an X-ray, (as a result of the earthquake, there are an abundance of X-ray machines) and it is thought that he has some lower bowel obstruction. There is some question of how to treat him as he is badly dehydrated. With all of the talent we have here, the biggest issue is who wants to do the very difficult task of inserting an IV into the arm of a dehydrated, malnourished baby! We have come back down the mountaiin and find that he has been taken to Port-au-Prince for further care.
Bonjour! an increadibly bright clear day here in Haiti. As i look out the back window, all I can see is the verdant mountainside in front of me that rises out of the riverbed of rocks and limestone. There is a house at the foot of the guest house that looks very nice. The roofs and gutter systems here are very interesting.
The round things you see at the top are the water tanks that store water pumped up from the cistern below the house – Think of it as a Winnetka basement in rainstorms. When the power is on (there is no power at all this morning, meaning that the public power has been off so long that the backup batteries that are charged through an inverter when power is on, have all discharged) Notice the gutter system, they are very important to collect the water, and there are outdoor systems to collect water as well.
We are going to church this morning. We all dress up (suitable for the region) and are to be transported up the the Church. We are then going to visit the small village surrounding the church.
The afternoon will be spent (according to local custom) liesurly. How we will do without sunday football will be interesting. We have not been able to access the internet so no one has been able to get college scores. This is almost as difficult for me as the not drinking part.
